How cycles work

The 90-Minute Rule

A typical sleep cycle lasts roughly 90 minutes. You transition from light sleep to deep sleep, into REM sleep, and back. If your alarm rings in the middle of a deep sleep cycle, you often experience 'sleep inertia' (feeling tired and disoriented). Waking up between cycles prevents this.
