A UUID (Universally Unique Identifier) is a 128-bit label used for information in computer systems. While the probability that a UUID will be duplicated is not zero, it is close enough to zero to be negligible. This allows anyone to create a UUID and use it to identify something with near certainty that the identifier does not duplicate one that has already been created.
Each 'x' is replaced with a random hexadecimal digit, and 'y' is a random digit from 8 to b. Version 4 UUIDs are entirely random except for the version bits.
The number of possible version 4 UUIDs is 2^122. To put this in perspective, the chance of a collision is equivalent to generating 1 billion UUIDs every second for 100 years.
